Author: Maria S., Marketing Committee Unlike physical illness, mental health disorders are hard to diagnose based on the symptoms that the patient is presenting. This dilemma stems from the fact that there is no medical test that can accurately diagnose the presence of a mental illness in a patient. It can also be hard to decipher the disparities between what are considered normal behaviors and what may be signs of a mental illness. Common symptoms can be shared among an array of mental disorders, also making it difficult for healthcare providers to give an accurate diagnosis. Nonetheless, being able to recognize symptoms or signs related to mental illness can aid in the process of finding the right treatment for the patient. Taking this into account, we might think that identifying people at risk of a psychiatric disorders is not possible, but current advances in the medical field say otherwise. Author: Maria A., Marketing Committee Happy Hispanic Heritage month! As we navigate this month, let's celebrate and continue to uplift the great contributions given to the medical field by these historic latine doctors. Reports show that as of 2019, 14.2% of latines obtained a bachelor's degree, 9.5% obtained a master's degree, and 7.5% obtained a doctoral degree. Current reports suggest that there has been a steady rise in these numbers as of late. As we celebrate this month, let's take the time to appreciate the Hispanic community for all of their historical and present contributions to modern medicine. And if you are currently a pre-medical or medical student in need of some words of encouragement, ¡échale ganas!
